History and Origins of the Finnish SpitzThe History and Origins of the Finnish Spitz is really interesting. The history of the Finnish Spitz began in the early 1800s when the breed was taken from Central Russia across to Finland. The breed almost went extinct when they began crossing them with other breeds. This was until two Helsinki sportsmen realized their outstanding ability and managed to save the breed. The dog was originally used for hunting birds and small game. It would do this by alerting hunters with a distinctive ringing bark or yodel when he had sought his prey. The Finnish Spitz is strong-minded, independent thinking, dedicated and lively; attributes which helped considerably when hunting birds and game. This is the national dog of Finland. The original name of this breed was Suomenpystrykorva meaning Finnish Cock-Eared Dog. It has also been known as the Finnish Barking Birddog. The American Kennel Club officially recognized the breed in 1991. | |
