History and Origins of the English FoxhoundThe History and Origins of the English Foxhound is really interesting. The history of the English Foxhound began many years ago, before the 1800s, in Great Britain when breeders decided that they required an energetic dog with high endurance and stamina that was capable of fox hunting in packs alongside hunters on horseback. They required an independent dog that would show willingness and dedication; a dog that showed enthusiasm that could meet the requirements for this pressurised work but would also make a worthy companion. Records through studbooks from the British Masters of Foxhounds Association dating back to the 1800s show more than 250 various foxhound hunting packs. By the mid 1900s, the English Foxhound became evident in America. The breed is thought to have been created by crossing the greyhound, bulldog and fox terrier. The breed was formally recognised by the American Kennel Club in 1909. | |
